Kataang's 2nd Kiss - Katara's reaction  

Note: This is a revised and longer version of my Kataang’s 2nd Kiss Analysis. I deleted that one because it wasn’t much of an analysis. (Sorry to all those who faved it.) But this new one is. The intro is the same while the middle and end are completely different.

So let’s discuss “the kiss.”

What’s up with Katara’s reaction? Why did she pull away?

I’ve heard 2 arguments.

Zutarians – It’s because she doesn’t love him, duh.

Kataangers – Katara was obviously reacting to what Aang said BEFORE the kiss. He probably told her how he couldn’t go into the Avatar State because of his love for her.

Now, I'm going to examine this second argument.

Suppose a friend of yours was telling you how one of their loved ones just died from a tragic accident. So you listen to them, and their story sinks it. Gosh, you feel sorry for your friend. Then all of a sudden – WHAM. He/she kisses you – full on the lips.

Do you…
A) Think: Omg! He/she just kissed me!
Or
B) Think: Omg! My poor friend! How could their loved one die in a tragic accident?

So, how would you respond?

Be HONEST.

You know the answer is A.

So, since the answer is A, the fact is....Katara WAS reacting to Aang’s kiss. Perhaps Aang did tell her about the Avatar State. Even if he immediately kissed her right afterwards, she wouldn't have reacted to what he said moments before. She would be reacting to what was happing to her at THAT precise moment - which was Aang's lips, pressing against her own.

So...since Katara WAS reacting to the kiss, why did she pull away?

Remember what Lo and Li said? (Lo/Li = twin hags)

Li: "Ember Island is a magical place. Keep an open mind."
Lo: "Give it a chance..."
Li & Lo: "…and it can help you understand yourselves and each other."

I believe the kiss scene takes place on ember island. And if it does, that means the island will help Katara understand herself more better. Like how Zuko understood why he was so angry. He was angry at himself. For choosing the wrong side, for betraying his Uncle.  

Now back to “the kiss.” You saw Aang leaning forward, with his eyes closed, kissing her. And you saw how Katara stood there, staring down at him, unsurprised, as if she was expecting it. For a half second she almost closes her eyes, almost like she's thinking of kissing Aang back. Then Bam! She leaps back, in surprise.

Why?

Could it be? That perhaps at that precise moment, the reason why she pulls away, is because she finally realizes, she does not like Aang? Not as a lover, but as a friend? You saw how her hand shot up to cover her mouth and how her eyes widened. I would interpret that as a sign of realization, perhaps shock. Because she realizes the truth. That this isn’t what she wants - a romantic relationship with Aang. This could explain why she gasps. Because she doesn’t want to, or know how to break his heart.

It’s a possibility, right? I mean, in the Cave of Two Lovers it was already subtly foreshadowed that Katara would indeed break his heart. (Read my Ultimate Zutara Foreshadowing if you have no idea what I’m talking about)


So, after objectively reading all of this, who do you think Katara will choose? Twinkle Toes or Zu-zu?

Isn't it obvious? She'll pick Haru! Just look at that mustache! Sexy, right?

But seriously, if the creators can make Yukka happen beautifully in only two episodes, then Zutara can happen in six.
